What is the Firestore skill?
The Firestore skill (firebase-firestore) is Firebase's official Agent Skill for Cloud Firestore: it teaches Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents to pick or create a Firestore database, model data, define indexes and write SDK code that fits the database's edition. It is for developers who let an agent build the data layer of a Firebase app.
It comes from firebase/agent-skills, which the README calls "A collection of skills for AI coding agents, to help them understand and work with Firebase more effectively." Its description opens: "Sets up, manages, queries, and configures Cloud Firestore databases (Standard/Enterprise edition), including data modeling, security rules, indexes, and SDK integrations (Web, Python, iOS, Android, Flutter)."
The description also lists what it is not for: "Don't use for Firebase Hosting, Data Connect, Auth, Storage/GCS, Crashlytics, Functions, or BigQuery." As of 26 October 2026, its skills.sh page listed about 135,500 installs (snapshot, 26 October 2026).
What does it do?
The skill's first rule: "Before setting up dependencies, writing data models, or configuring security rules, you MUST always identify the Firestore instance edition." Firestore comes in Standard and Enterprise editions, and the skill keeps separate guides for each.
Step 1: find or create the database. The agent runs firestore:databases:list and firestore:databases:get through npx -y firebase-tools@latest, then asks which database to target. With no database, it defaults to Enterprise edition, asks for a location from firestore:locations, and creates one.
Step 2: follow the edition's guides. The references/ folder has two sets:
Standard (references/standard/) |
Enterprise (references/enterprise/) |
|
|---|---|---|
| Provisioning | Yes | Yes |
| Data model | Not a separate file | data_model.md |
| SDK guides | Web, Android, iOS, Flutter | Web, Python, Android, iOS, Flutter |
| Indexes | Yes | Yes |
What the guides cover:
- Provisioning without prompts. The agent writes
firebase.json,firestore.rulesandfirestore.indexes.jsonby hand instead of running the interactivefirebase init. The starter rules deny all reads and writes. - Deploys and the emulator.
firebase deploy --only firestore(or just:rulesor:indexes) andfirebase emulators:start --only firestore. - Indexes per edition. The Standard guide notes single-field indexes are created automatically and composite ones are not. The Enterprise guide says Enterprise "does not create any indexes by default", explains sparse and unique indexes, and warns that unindexed queries do full collection scans.
- Pipelines first on Enterprise. The Enterprise web guide tells the agent to default to Pipeline operations, including joins through subqueries, and to use standard
where()queries and real-time listeners only when real-time snapshots or offline caching are required. - Current SDK versions. The Android guide has the agent query Google's Maven repository for the latest Firebase BoM version instead of guessing one.
Security rules go elsewhere. "Whenever your task requires creating, authoring, or modifying firestore.rules", the skill delegates to the firestore-rules-author subagent if subagents are available, or to the firestore-rules-creation skill if not.
How do you install it?
Firebase's agent skills docs give one route per tool. Pick one per agent.
Claude Code (all Firebase skills):
claude plugin marketplace add firebase/agent-skills
claude plugin install firebase@firebase
Codex:
codex plugin marketplace add firebase/agent-skills
codex plugin add firebase@firebase
Cursor: install the plugin from the Cursor Marketplace, or run npx skills add firebase/agent-skills --agent=cursor.
Just this skill. The command from skills.sh:
npx skills add https://github.com/firebase/agent-skills --skill firebase-firestore
If you install only this skill, add firestore-rules-creation as well, since the skill sends all rules work there when no subagent is available. Firebase's docs suggest updating regularly; for npx installs the update command is npx skills update --all.
For skill folder locations, see Claude Code plugins, Codex skills and Cursor skills.
How do you use it?
Describe the data you need and the platform. Expect the agent to list your databases and ask which one to use before it writes code.
Example prompts (suggestions, not quotes from the repo):
Set up Firestore for this Next.js app: a posts collection with author profiles, and the indexes the feed query needs.Which edition is our Firestore database? Then show me how to query orders by status and date in the web SDK.Add Firestore to the Android app with the current BoM version and a repository class for users.Rewrite the client-side join between articles and authors as a Firestore pipeline.Start the Firestore emulator and point the app at it for local tests.
For rules, ask directly ("write security rules so users can only edit their own posts") and the skill will route the work to the rules skill or subagent.
Tips and limits
- Audits (8 October 2026). On skills.sh, Gen Agent Trust Hub rated firebase-firestore Pass and Socket rated it Pass. Snyk rated it Warn, medium risk, with one finding (W011, third-party content exposure) that it scored low risk at 0.10, because the skill uses
curlto read Maven metadata fromdl.google.com. Gen Agent Trust Hub noted that the Enterprise Android guide reads documentation files from local Maven source JARs without sanitizing them. - Enterprise is the default for new databases. If you want Standard edition, say so before the agent creates anything. The Enterprise provisioning guide notes the database ID must not be
(default). - It runs real commands. Listing, creating and deploying go through the Firebase CLI against your signed-in project. Review rules and index deploys before you approve them.
- Narrow scope. Auth, Hosting, Storage and Functions belong to other Firebase skills;
firebase-basicscovers project setup. - Pipelines are Enterprise only. The Standard guides use standard queries.
Save it in your Kipt library
The repo is Apache-2.0 licensed, so you can copy and modify the skill if you keep the license and notices. In Kipt, open Skills and paste https://github.com/firebase/agent-skills/tree/main/skills/firebase-firestore into the import box; Kipt reads the SKILL.md and both reference folders. Paste the repo link instead to choose several Firebase skills from a list, such as firestore-rules-creation. Your library lives in your own private GitHub repo and installs into Claude Code or Codex with one command:
npx skills add https://github.com/<you>/<repo>.git --all -g
Kipt is not affiliated with Firebase or Google.
