Prisma CLI skill: migrations, db push and generate for agents

The prisma-cli skill gives Claude Code, Codex and Cursor a Prisma ORM 7 CLI reference: init, generate, migrate, db push, dev and mcp. How to install and use it.

What is the prisma-cli skill?

The prisma-cli skill is Prisma's official command reference for AI coding agents: it teaches Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents the Prisma ORM 7 CLI, from prisma init and prisma generate to migrate dev, migrate deploy and db push. It is for developers who let an agent run schema and migration work in a Prisma 7 project.

It lives in prisma/skills, whose README describes the repo as "A collection of skills for AI coding agents working with Prisma ORM, Prisma Postgres and Prisma Compute." The skill's description reads: "Prisma ORM 7 CLI reference for existing Prisma 7 applications or explicitly selected Prisma 7 workflows. Covers prisma init, generate, migrate, db, dev, studio, and mcp. For setup, connection repair, or Prisma 8, use prisma-orm-setup; not the Prisma Platform CLI."

As of 26 October 2026, its skills.sh page listed about 389,100 installs (snapshot, 26 October 2026), and its metadata gives version 7.9.1.

What does it do?

The SKILL.md is a quick reference plus 20 reference files in references/, one per command plus an AI safety note. It sorts commands into categories and priorities, with migrations marked CRITICAL:

Category Commands
Setup init
Generation generate
Validation validate, format
Development dev (local Prisma Postgres)
Database db pull, db push, db seed, db execute
Migrations migrate dev, migrate deploy, migrate reset, migrate status, migrate diff, migrate resolve
Utility complete, studio, mcp, version, debug

Beyond the command list, it sets some ground rules for the agent:

  • Use the project's own CLI version. "Do not install a floating prisma@latest to run these commands."
  • Keep the ORM and Platform CLIs apart. The stable ORM command is prisma; the public beta Platform package is @prisma/cli, with a binary named prisma-cli. Compute and Platform work go to the prisma-compute and prisma-postgres-setup skills.
  • Configure through prisma.config.ts. The skill shows a config with the schema path, migrations path, seed command and a DATABASE_URL loaded with dotenv.
  • Run follow-up steps explicitly. Run prisma generate after migrate dev or db push when you need fresh client output, and prisma db seed after migrate dev or migrate reset when you need seed data.
  • Bun needs a flag. Use bunx --bun prisma ..., or Prisma runs on Node.js because of the CLI shebang.

The prisma mcp reference says the MCP server exposes migrate-status, migrate-dev and Prisma Studio tooling but deliberately has no migrate-reset tool.

How do you install it?

Just this skill. The command from skills.sh:

npx skills add https://github.com/prisma/skills --skill prisma-cli

All Prisma skills. From the README:

npx skills add prisma/skills

With a new project. The Prisma ORM 7.9.0 release notes say "prisma init now installs the prisma/skills catalog into freshly scaffolded projects." The install is best effort, and you can opt out with --no-skills.

In Claude Code, skills land in .claude/skills/ in your project, or ~/.claude/skills/ with the global -g option, per the Claude Code skills docs. For Codex and Cursor, see Codex skills and Cursor skills.

There are no API keys in the skill. You need Prisma 7 in your project and a database the CLI can reach, or the local database from prisma dev.

How do you use it?

The README says skills "are automatically available once installed", and the agent uses them when a task matches. Ask in plain terms and name the environment.

Example prompts (suggestions, not quotes from the repo):

  • Add a Post model related to User, create a migration named add_posts, and regenerate the client.
  • Our CI deploy fails on migrations. Check migrate status and tell me what is pending before you change anything.
  • Start a local Prisma Postgres with prisma dev in the background and point DATABASE_URL at it.
  • Introspect the existing database with db pull and explain what changed in schema.prisma.
  • Generate the SQL diff between the current database and schema.prisma without applying it.

For a production database, ask for migrate deploy and migrate status, not migrate dev. The skill lists production migrations under their own heading.

Tips and limits

  • Audits (29 September 2026). On skills.sh, Gen Agent Trust Hub, Socket and Snyk all rated prisma-cli Pass. Snyk reported "No issues detected." Gen Agent Trust Hub listed command execution, dynamic execution and indirect prompt injection as categories it reviewed, and noted the skill's consent checkpoint.
  • Destructive commands need your words. Per the Prisma CLI reference, Prisma refuses migrate reset and similar commands when it detects an AI agent until you consent. The skill's agent-safety.md says the agent must explain the impact, ask right before the action, and pass your exact message in PRISMA_USER_CONSENT_FOR_DANGEROUS_AI_ACTION. It adds: "Never fabricate consent, reuse an old unrelated approval, or bypass the checkpoint by hiding agent-detection environment variables."
  • Prisma 7 only. The repo README says new ORM setups default to Prisma ORM 8 and that the legacy recipes in prisma-cli should not be used for Prisma 8 setup. Install prisma-orm-setup for that.
  • Watch for the deprecated name. prisma-database-setup is still listed on skills.sh, but its SKILL.md calls it a "Deprecated compatibility name for prisma-orm-setup".
  • It is a reference, not a policy. Whether an environment uses migrations or db push is still your call; say so in your prompt or project instructions.

Save it in your Kipt library

The repo and the skill's frontmatter are MIT licensed, so you can copy and edit it as long as you keep the copyright notice. In Kipt, open Skills and paste https://github.com/prisma/skills/tree/main/prisma-cli into the import box; Kipt reads the SKILL.md and all 20 reference files. Paste the repo link instead to pick several Prisma skills from a list. Your library lives in your own private GitHub repo and installs into Claude Code or Codex with one command:

npx skills add https://github.com/<you>/<repo>.git --all -g

Questions

What is the prisma-cli skill?

prisma-cli is an Agent Skill in Prisma's official prisma/skills repo. It is a reference for Prisma ORM 7 CLI commands: init, generate, validate, format, dev, db pull, db push, db seed, db execute, the migrate commands, studio and mcp. It also tells the agent how to handle Prisma's AI safety checkpoint for destructive commands.

How do I install the Prisma CLI skill?

Run npx skills add https://github.com/prisma/skills --skill prisma-cli. To install every Prisma skill, run npx skills add prisma/skills. Since Prisma ORM 7.9.0, prisma init also installs the prisma/skills catalog into new projects unless you pass --no-skills.

Does the prisma-cli skill work with Prisma 8?

No. The SKILL.md says its commands and examples apply to Prisma ORM 7 only. For setup, connection repair or a Prisma 8 application, it points the agent to the separate prisma-orm-setup skill in the same repo.

Can an AI agent run prisma migrate reset?

Not without your consent. Prisma blocks migrate reset, db push --force-reset and db push --accept-data-loss when it detects an AI agent, until you give explicit consent. The skill tells the agent to explain the data loss and ask you right before the command, and never to invent consent.

What is the difference between prisma-cli and prisma-client-api?

prisma-cli covers terminal commands: migrations, schema sync, client generation and the local dev database. prisma-client-api covers the code you write against Prisma Client: queries, filters, relations, transactions and raw SQL. Many projects install both.
