What is the Prisma skill?
The Prisma skill most people install is prisma-client-api, Prisma's official reference for writing Prisma Client queries: CRUD methods, select and include, filters, relations, transactions and raw SQL. It gives Claude Code and other agents the Prisma 7 Client API shape so they stop guessing at method names and options.
It is one of ten skill folders in prisma/skills, which the README describes as "A collection of skills for AI coding agents working with Prisma ORM, Prisma Postgres and Prisma Compute." The skill's description reads: "Prisma Client API reference covering model queries, filters, operators, and client methods. Use when writing database queries, using CRUD operations, filtering data, or configuring Prisma Client. Triggers on "prisma query", "findMany", "create", "update", "delete", "$transaction"."
As of 24 October 2026, its skills.sh page listed 387.9K installs (snapshot, 24 October 2026), the highest of any skill in the repo.
What does it do?
The skill is model-invoked: the agent loads it when you write or change Prisma queries, or when trigger words like findMany or $transaction come up. The SKILL.md is an index with quick tables and examples, and eight reference files hold the detail. It ranks them by priority and impact:
| Priority | Reference file | Impact | Covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | constructor.md |
High | PrismaClient setup, adapters, logging, singleton and Next.js patterns |
| 2 | model-queries.md |
Critical | CRUD and bulk operations |
| 3 | query-options.md |
High | select, include, omit, sorting, pagination |
| 4 | filters.md |
High | Scalar and logical filter operators |
| 5 | relations.md |
High | Relation reads and nested writes |
| 6 | transactions.md |
Critical | Array and interactive transactions |
| 7 | raw-queries.md |
Critical | $queryRaw and $executeRaw safety |
| 8 | client-methods.md |
Medium | $connect, $disconnect, $on, $extends, satisfies |
Useful details from the reference files:
- Model methods. The SKILL.md lists 17, from
findUniqueandfindFirstOrThrowtocreateManyAndReturn, updateManyAndReturn, upsert, aggregateandgroupBy. - Client construction. Examples pass a driver adapter, such as
PrismaPgfrom@prisma/adapter-pg, tonew PrismaClient({ adapter }). The constructor file includes a global singleton pattern that prevents multiple client instances in development, plus a Next.js version. - Transactions. Sequential transactions take an array and roll back together. Interactive transactions take a callback with a scoped
txclient and options formaxWait, timeoutandisolationLevel. The file's advice is to keep transactions short, with only database work inside. - Raw SQL safety. Tagged templates (
$queryRaw,$executeRaw) parameterize values.$queryRawUnsafeis flagged as an SQL injection risk with string concatenation, andPrisma.raw()is marked "not safe for user input". It also notes that Postgres returnsBigIntforCOUNT.
The SKILL.md links out to Prisma's Client API reference for anything it doesn't cover; that link now redirects to the Prisma ORM v7 section of the docs.
How do you install it?
The skills.sh page gives this command:
npx skills add https://github.com/prisma/skills --skill prisma-client-api
The README also shows the short form, npx skills add prisma/skills --skill prisma-client-api, and npx skills add prisma/skills to install every Prisma skill. To see what's available first:
npx skills add prisma/skills --list
The skills CLI puts the folder in .claude/skills/prisma-client-api/ in your project, or ~/.claude/skills/prisma-client-api/ for all projects, the standard Claude Code skill locations. The README doesn't document a Claude Code plugin for this repo.
claude.ai. You can zip the prisma-client-api folder and upload it under Customize > Skills, as Anthropic's help article on skills describes. The MIT License allows this.
Codex and Cursor read the same SKILL.md format; see Codex skills and Cursor skills.
How do you use it?
Ask for queries in your own schema's terms. The README's examples include "How do I use transactions in Prisma?"; these are further suggestions:
Write a findMany for posts by published authors, newest first, 20 per page with cursor pagination.Move a balance between two accounts in an interactive transaction and roll back if the sender goes negative. This report needs a raw SQL query. Rewrite it with $queryRaw so the user input is parameterized.Set up a PrismaClient singleton for our Next.js app so dev reloads don't exhaust connections.Add a Prisma Client extension that adds a softDelete method to every model.
Requirements: a project with Prisma ORM and a generated client. The examples import from ../generated/client and use a driver adapter, so they match a Prisma 7 style setup. No API keys or scripts are involved.
Tips and limits
- Check your Prisma version. The skill's metadata says version 7.9.1. The README says new setups default to Prisma ORM 8, that Prisma 8 APIs come from a package-owned
prisma-8skill installed withprisma skills sync, and that the existingprisma-cli,prisma-client-apiand upgrade skills should not be used for their legacy recipes on Prisma 8 setup. For an existing Prisma 6 or 7 app, the README saysprisma-orm-setupkeeps it on its version. Prisma's own ORM docs say: "Prisma ORM 8 is a release candidate, not yet a final release, and it is whatnpm install prismagives you today." So on a fresh install, check which major version you got before relying on this skill's examples. - Queries only. Migrations,
prisma generateanddb pushlive in theprisma-cliskill. Upgrading from v6 isprisma-upgrade-v7. Install those if you need them. - Two deprecated names.
prisma-database-setupandprisma-postgresare compatibility names that loadprisma-orm-setupandprisma-postgres-setup. They show high install counts on skills.sh, but you don't need them for new installs. - Raw SQL is still your responsibility. The skill steers away from
$queryRawUnsafe, but review any generated raw query that takes user input. - Security audits. On 24 October 2026, skills.sh showed Pass from Gen Agent Trust Hub, Socket and Snyk.

Save it in your Kipt library
Kipt keeps your prompts and skills as Markdown in a private GitHub repo you own. Open Skills and paste https://github.com/prisma/skills into the import box; it shows the list of Prisma skills so you can pick prisma-client-api and prisma-cli together. You can also paste the single folder link or drop a .zip. Everything installs into Claude Code or Codex with one command:
npx skills add https://github.com/<you>/<repo>.git --all -g
Kipt is not affiliated with Prisma.
