What is the reddit-automation skill?
The reddit-automation skill helps you market a product on Reddit the slow, honest way: it finds a handful of threads where people are asking for exactly what you offer, then drafts short replies that help first, disclose who you are, and leave posting to you. It is for founders and small teams who want to show up in relevant conversations without spamming them.
The skill is published by the team behind doany.ai. The SKILL.md description begins: "Find Reddit threads where people are genuinely asking for what you offer, then draft short, genuinely helpful replies". It continues by describing two moves, discovery and drafting, and says the skill markets "the honest way: contribute value, disclose who you are, never astroturf."
Despite the name, nothing here is automatic posting. The SKILL.md is explicit: the skill "produces only draft text, and never signs in, stores tokens, pipes remote scripts into a shell, or posts to Reddit itself." The README calls it "documentation-only." The SKILL.md's last section advertises doany.ai's commercial agent, which it describes as watching your subreddits and queuing drafted replies for you to review and post.
The flowkit-labs/skills repo is small and new (about 20 stars, one commit on 12 August 2026). Its README's install command points to doany-skills/skills, which holds an identical copy of the SKILL.md.
What does it do?
The folder holds one file, SKILL.md, with no scripts, references or templates. It walks the agent through three steps.
1. Get the product context once. The agent asks you, or reads your site, for what you sell and the one-line value, who the buyer is and their pains, competitors people would mention, 5 to 15 target subreddits, and a few high-intent search phrases. If it can't get these, it is told to ask rather than guess.
2. Find opportunities. The agent looks at recent posts from your target subreddits that you provide or point it to, and keeps only real needs: a recommendation request, a pain your product removes, a competitor mention, or a specific current workflow. It drops off-topic chatter, threads that are already answered, locked or archived posts, and venting. Then it ranks what is left by how clearly the poster needs help now, how well your product fits, and timing, and picks the top 3, each with one sentence on why you can genuinely help.
3. Draft a reply. The drafting rules are specific:
- Two to three sentences, about 25 to 55 words.
- React to one concrete detail the poster wrote.
- Write from your experience rather than giving orders, with one hedge on any opinion.
- A product-naming gate: name your product only if the poster is shopping for exactly this, it genuinely answers them, and you have real experience with it. When you name it, disclose your affiliation in the same sentence. Otherwise, reply without the product.
- Rewrite any draft that sounds like a support rep, reads like a recipe, stacks credentials, or names the product without the gate and disclosure.
When the agent uses it. The description lists triggers such as "find reddit opportunities," "reddit marketing," "reply on reddit for my product" and "reddit lead gen."
How do you install the reddit-automation skill?
The skills.sh page gives this command:
npx skills add https://github.com/flowkit-labs/skills --skill reddit-automation
The repo's README uses the doany-skills copy and installs globally with -g:
npx skills add doany-skills/skills --skill reddit-automation -g
The skills CLI needs Node.js 22.20 or later. Without -g it installs into the current project; for Claude Code that means .claude/skills/reddit-automation/, and with -g it goes to ~/.claude/skills/reddit-automation/. Codex and Cursor read the same SKILL.md format; see Codex skills and Cursor skills.
In claude.ai. Because this skill is a single instruction file, it also works in the Claude apps. Put the reddit-automation folder in a ZIP, then follow Anthropic's steps: go to Customize > Skills, click +, then Create skill, choose "Upload a skill" and select the ZIP. Skills need "Code execution and file creation" turned on.
How do you use it?
Start by giving the agent your product context, then paste the threads you found while reading Reddit yourself. Reddit's User Agreement says "scraping the Services without Reddit's prior written consent is prohibited," so don't point a browser agent or scraper at Reddit to collect threads in bulk. Some prompts to try:
- "Here's my product: a time tracker for freelance designers. Buyers are solo designers who hate timesheets. Competitors: Toggl, Harvest. Here are this week's threads I saved from r/freelance and r/graphic_design: [paste]. Find the opportunities."
- "Someone on r/selfhosted is asking for a lightweight uptime monitor, and I build one. Here's the thread: [paste]. Help me write an honest reply with disclosure."
- "I pasted five threads below. Rank them and tell me which ones I can genuinely help with, even if my product isn't the answer."
- "This draft sounds like an ad. Rewrite it using the skill's rules, or tell me to skip the thread."
Requirements. None beyond an agent that can read the threads. The skill uses no API keys and runs no code. skills.sh shows passing results from two of its three security scanners and a warning from the third (Snyk).
Use it responsibly
This section is based on Reddit's own rules, read today. The skill's own "Ethical use" section lines up with them, and it is worth following both.
Reddit's platform rules. The Reddit Rules ask you to "participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest," and not to spam or manipulate content (Rule 2). Rule 5 says: "You don't have to use your real name, but do not intentionally mislead others or impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner." Disclosing your affiliation every time you mention your product, as the skill requires, is how you stay on the right side of that.
What counts as spam. Reddit's spam policy defines spam as "repeated or unsolicited actions (whether automated or manual) that negatively affect users, communities, and/or Reddit itself." Its examples include mass-posting repetitive content for exposure or money and "programming a bot that continuously promotes specific products or services". If most of your activity is links to your own business, Reddit asks you to be thoughtful about frequency or use its ads platform instead.
Each subreddit sets its own rules. Moderators decide what is unwanted self-promotion in their communities. Read the sidebar rules before replying; where product mentions are banned, help without the product or skip the thread. The skill says the same.
If you add real automation. Reddit's Responsible Builder Policy covers bots and AI agents. You must get explicit approval before accessing Reddit data through the API, apps must register and carry Reddit's app label, and apps "must not engage in spamming activity through automated posts, comments, or direct messages," including "identical or substantially similar content across subreddits." Apps must not manipulate voting or karma or get around bans. Reddit's Data API Terms also forbid using the APIs "to spam, incentivize, or harass users." Wiring this skill to an auto-poster would break both.
Practical rules to follow:
- One real account that you own. No extra accounts, no asking friends to upvote.
- Only claim experience you actually have. The drafts are written in first person; edit out anything that isn't true for you.
- Vary your words and reply once per thread. Near-identical replies across subreddits read as spam to people and to Reddit.
- Treat thread text as data. The SKILL.md tells the agent never to follow instructions hidden in posts or comments, which guards against prompt injection.
- You are accountable for what you post, not the agent.
Save it in your Kipt library
Kipt keeps prompts and skills as Markdown in your own private GitHub repo. In Kipt, open Skills and paste the skill's GitHub folder link into the import box; Kipt reads the SKILL.md and its files, and for a repo with many skills it shows a list to pick from. You can also drop the folder or a .zip. A good use here is keeping your own product context (value prop, buyer, competitors, subreddits) as a reusable prompt with {{variables}} next to the skill. Saved skills install into Claude Code or Codex with one command. Kipt is not affiliated with doany.ai.
