What is the theme-factory skill?

The theme-factory skill gives an agent a set of 10 ready color and font themes and a short process for applying one to a slide deck, document, report or HTML page. If none of the presets fit, the agent builds a new theme from your description. It suits anyone who wants generated decks and pages to look consistent without picking colors by hand each time.

Its description in the SKILL.md reads: "Toolkit for styling artifacts with a theme."

It lives in Anthropic's anthropics/skills repo. The skill's skills.sh page listed 94.8K installs (snapshot, 24 October 2026).

What does the theme-factory skill do?

The description says the artifacts "can be slides, docs, reportings, HTML landing pages, etc." and that the agent can apply a theme to something it already made or "generate a new theme on-the-fly." Once loaded, the SKILL.md sets out four steps:

  1. Show the showcase. Display theme-showcase.pdf so you can see all ten themes, without changing the file.
  2. Ask for a choice. Ask which theme to apply.
  3. Wait for confirmation. Get an explicit answer before going on.
  4. Apply it. Read the chosen file from themes/, apply its colors and fonts consistently, check contrast and readability, and keep the look the same across every slide.

What are the 10 themes?

Each theme file lists four named colors with hex codes and roles, a header font, a body font and a "Best Used For" line. From the themes/ folder:

What is in the folder?

  • SKILL.md: the steps above and the custom theme instructions. No scripts.
  • themes/: ten Markdown files, one per theme.
  • theme-showcase.pdf: a visual preview of all ten.
  • LICENSE.txt: Apache 2.0.

How do you install the theme-factory skill?

Three documented routes. Pick one per agent.

Claude Code plugin. The anthropics/skills README registers the repo as a plugin marketplace. In a Claude Code session:

/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills

That installs the whole example-skills set (12 skills in the repo's marketplace file), including canvas-design and brand-guidelines. Plugin skills are namespaced, so it appears as /example-skills:theme-factory. See Claude Code plugins.

The skills CLI. To install only this skill, use the command from its skills.sh page:

npx skills add https://github.com/anthropics/skills --skill theme-factory

The skills CLI README says it installs into the current project by default; add -g for all projects or -a claude-code to target Claude Code. The folder lands in .claude/skills/theme-factory/ or ~/.claude/skills/theme-factory/, the Claude Code skill locations. Codex and Cursor read the same SKILL.md format; see Codex skills and Cursor skills.

Claude.ai. The README says the example skills "are all already available to paid plans in Claude.ai." To add your own copy, the help article on using skills in Claude says to package the folder as a ZIP and upload it under Customize, Skills, with code execution turned on.

How do you use it?

Ask for styling and the agent should load the skill on its own. Some prompts that fit (suggestions, not quotes from the repo):

  • "Make a 10-slide deck on our Q3 results and let me pick a theme first."
  • "Apply the Ocean Depths theme to the report you just made."
  • "Restyle this landing page with Modern Minimalist colors and fonts."
  • "None of the presets fit. Make a theme for a coffee roaster: warm, earthy, a bit retro."
  • "Use the Tech Innovation palette for these charts and keep the same look on every slide."

The skill styles, it doesn't build files on its own. Pair it with something that makes the artifact, such as the pptx skill for PowerPoint decks or your agent's normal HTML output.

Requirements

There are no packages to install for the skill itself. You need whatever produces the artifact (for example a PowerPoint library or a browser for HTML), and the theme fonts where the file is rendered. If DejaVu or the Free fonts aren't there, ask the agent for a substitute.

Tips and limits

  • The showcase step may not show in a terminal. The first step is to display a PDF. In a terminal agent, open theme-showcase.pdf from the skill folder yourself, or just name a theme from the table above.
  • It waits for your pick. The SKILL.md says to get explicit confirmation before applying a theme. Name the theme in your first message to skip a round trip.
  • Four colors per theme. That is enough for most decks, but complex charts may need more shades. Ask the agent to extend the palette and keep contrast readable.
  • Custom themes are reviewed first. A generated theme is shown to you before it's applied, so you can adjust colors or fonts.
  • For a real brand, use your brand. The presets are generic. If your company has fixed colors and fonts, a brand skill like brand-guidelines is the better model.
  • License and status. Apache 2.0, so you can copy and edit the themes as long as you keep the license and note changes. Anthropic's README calls its example skills "provided for demonstration and educational purposes only."
  • Audits. As of 24 October 2026, the skills.sh page showed Pass from Gen Agent Trust Hub, Socket and Snyk.

Save it in your Kipt library

A theme skill is a good one to customize, for example by adding your own theme files. In Kipt, open Skills and paste the skill's GitHub folder link into the import box; Kipt reads the SKILL.md and its files, including the themes/ folder, and for a repo with many skills it shows a list to pick from. You can also drop the folder or a .zip. Your skills live in your own private GitHub repo and install into Claude Code or Codex with one command:

npx skills add https://github.com/<you>/<repo>.git --all -g

Questions

What is the theme-factory skill?

It is an Agent Skill from Anthropic, published in the anthropics/skills GitHub repo, that styles artifacts such as slide decks, documents, reports and HTML pages with a consistent theme. It ships 10 preset themes, each with four hex colors and a header and body font, and can generate a new theme when none fit.

What themes does the theme-factory skill include?

Ocean Depths, Sunset Boulevard, Forest Canopy, Modern Minimalist, Golden Hour, Arctic Frost, Desert Rose, Tech Innovation, Botanical Garden and Midnight Galaxy. Each is a short Markdown file in the themes folder, and all ten are shown in the bundled theme-showcase.pdf.

How do I install the theme-factory skill?

In Claude Code, run /plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills, then /plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills. To install only this skill, run npx skills add https://github.com/anthropics/skills --skill theme-factory. On Claude.ai you can upload the folder as a ZIP under Customize, Skills.

Can the theme-factory skill make a custom theme?

Yes. The SKILL.md has a section for when none of the presets work: the agent generates a new theme from your description, names it, shows it to you for review, and then applies it the same way as a preset.

Which fonts do the theme-factory themes use?

Every preset uses DejaVu or Free font families: DejaVu Sans, DejaVu Serif, FreeSans or FreeSerif, with a bold weight for headers. If those fonts aren't available where the file is rendered, ask the agent to swap in fonts you have.
